Common name: Northern Sea Oats
Untreated seed; packed by volume so pack quantities are approximate. Available in two size packs:
Gardener packet 100 seeds; Grower packet 250 seeds.
First-year flowering perennial.
This wonderful perennial grass is easy to grow and adds movement and texture to floral displays. Northern Sea Oats is used widely in floristry and is just as useful in the autumn garden. The flattened seed heads are held in gracefully arching panicles and the stems dry extremely well, retaining their form and sense of movement for dried as well as fresh flower arrangements.
Sow Feb-Apr; plants will produce seed heads in the first year from an early sowing. Sow Aug-Sept to overwinter for seed heads the following year. Sowing temp 18-21°C. Germination in 7-14 days in optimum conditions. A versatile grass, it will tolerate partial shade and damper soil conditions.
Cut as soon as the flattened seed heads are mature, and continue cutting through the autumn as the seed heads change colour from green to copper. Place straight into water and move to a cool place; no special conditioning required. Can be cut dry if processing for dried flowers; stand the stems upright in a vessel rather than hanging upside down in order to retain the arching shape of the stems.
Vase life: 10-14 days fresh; will last indefinitely when dried.
