Common name: Canterbury Bells
Untreated, British-grown seed. This variety is packed by volume so all pack quantities are approximate. Available in two pack sizes:
Gardener packet 600 seeds; Grower packet 4000 seeds.
Biennial. Requires a period of vernalisation (overwintering) to produce flowers.
A mix of white pink and purple-blue, Campanula Crown Single Mixed is a true biennial unlike our Big Ben campanula seeds which can be grown as annuals. Flowering in early summer, this variety is perfect for filling your borders with romantic, billowing stems, and it is a popular cut flower too.
Depending on location, sow April-June; biennial varieties should be sown by midsummer to ensure a good show of flowers in the following season. Sow at 15-18°C; do not cover when sowing as light will aid germination which should take 21-28 days in optimum conditions. Plant out from mid to late summer; plants need to develop a robust root system before the onset of winter, and flowering will occur through May-June in the following year. Pinch the initial flowering stem as it begins to elongate in order to stimulate production of the side shoots; these will produce many more, slender stems suitable for floristry work.
Cut when the first couple of blooms at the bottom of the stem begin to open - the remaining buds will continue to open in the vase. Strip the lower leaves and place straight into shallow water; keep stems upright to prevent them from bending towards the light.
Vase life: 7-10 days
