One of the earliest varieties to bloom, each anemone plant produces many flowering stems through the spring season. Characterised by their dark centres, the blooms initially open and close in response to light. The Marianne series have been developed by French flower breeders and are produced in France; they have large blooms, and show good resistance to botrytis. Anemones are hardy, and they are suitable for growing either outside or under cover.
The plants grow from corms; these are supplied to growers in early autumn. Corms can be planted in succession through autumn and winter for flower harvests through late-winter to late-spring. Plants grown under cover through the winter months produce higher quality blooms in spring with much longer stem length than plants grown outside. Plants grown outside may need protection from the worst of the winter weather.
Re-hydrate and pre-sprout corms before planting out. Protect from rodents who love to eat the bulbs. Planting density: 16-25 plants/m2.
Cutting stage: Cut when the flower is fully coloured and there is 0.5cm between the collar (small leaves around the stem) and the bloom. The flower should be allowed to open 1-3 times before cutting to ensure the bloom develops to its full potential once cut.
Conditioning: Straight into shallow cool water; wrap to keep stems upright as stems will bend if they do not remain upright.
Vase life: 7 days
Top tip: Consistent watering is required for good stem length and flower production when the plants are growing.
