Briza maxima is an annual grass, which will flower early in the season if overwintered. It has larger spikelets than the perennial Briza, and the nodding heads are fantastic for adding movement in floral displays. It is also great as a dried flower though the stems are quite fine,
Sow seeds Feb-May or Aug-Sep. Multi-sow seed into cells in a module tray or sow direct into the garden. Sowing temp 18-21°C; germination should take 7-14 days in optimum conditions. Sow in succession for harvest throughout the summer. Plant out into a sunny position in well-drained soil.
Cut as soon as the spikelets have formed; if cutting to dry ensure the stems are cut whilst still green on the plant otherwise the heads will shatter. Bunch and place into water; no special conditioning requirements. Hang upside down to dry.
Vase life: 10-14 days; lasts indefinitely once dried.
